*Fundação D. Anna de Sommer Champalimaud e Dr. Carlos Montez Champalimaud (Champalimaud Foundation), a private, non-profit research institution, is opening a call for a post-doctoral researcher. Eligible candidates must hold a PhD or Doctorate degree and will be offered an employment contract with unknown term, within the scope of the research project entitled “Cortical circuits for sensory expectations” – LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER 030328- from the call Nº 02/SAICT/2017 at the Petreanu Lab, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Lisbon Regional Operational Programme and by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), through Portuguese National Funds (PIDDAC).*
The contract is to be entered into by and between the Champalimaud Foundation and the selected candidate in accordance with all applicable legislation, including Law-Decree 57/2016, of the 29th of August of 2016 in its current edition and the General Labour Code, as well as the internal rules and regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation, taking into account the conditions set out in the above mentioned Law-Decree for the recruitment of PhD Holders within the scope of research projects funded by public funds.
The employment contract is with unknown term, starting within the 30 days after this call closing date. Notwithstanding, the parties may, at any time, wish to celebrate a permanent employment contract.
WORK TO BE PERFORMED
The fellow will collaborate closely with team members of the Cortical Circuits Laboratory on a project studying how knowledge about the environment is represented in cortical circuits, using state of the art optical and electrophysiological recordings of cortical neurons, viral and optogenetic methods in rodents. The fellow will have the opportunity to learn these techniques from highly experienced colleagues.
Depending on the expertise of the fellow, he/she will participate in:
~ Circuit analysis in ex vivo using cortical slices using optogenetic circuit-mapping methods and patch-clamp recordings
~ In vivo recordings of axons using genetically-encoded Ca2++ indicators and two-photon imaging.
~ Viral circuit-tracing methods
PROFILE OF CANDIDATES
Any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) holding a PhD degree.
» PhD in Neuroscience, Biology, Bioengineering, Cognitive Neuroscience, Experimental Psychology, Engineering or other research areas relevant to neurophysiology, neuroanatomy and optical manipulations of the nervous system.
» Good capacity and value for teamwork, and communication skills.
» Ability to Work and Learn independently, critical thinking capacity to independently develop research project.
» Research experience, with hands-on technical experience in rodent surgery, rodent handling, and neuroanatomical methods.
» Fluency in English.
Additional optional qualifications:
~ Experience in any of the following areas will be beneficial to the application: in vivo or ex vivo patch-clamp recordings, acute brain slice preparations, extracellular recordings, viral methods for circuit analysis, optogenetics or two-photon microscopy.
~ Experience with computer programming (e.g. C, Python, Matlab) ideally in the context of data analysis
The monthly remuneration to be attributed is the 33rd level of the single remuneration table (TRU), approved by Portaria nº 1553-C/2008, of December 31st, starting at a base salary of 2,128.34 Euros.
EVALUATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
The candidate’s selection will fully observe all applicable legislation and will consist in the evaluation of the scientific and curricular backgrounds of the candidates, with particular attention given to the relevance, quality, actuality and adequacy of the aforementioned backgrounds, to be weighed as follows:
— motivation letter: 15%;
— curriculum vitae: 70%.
Evaluation scale: Each application shall be evaluated by the jury in a scale from 0% (not adequate) to 85% (excellent). Should there be a draw, candidates will be invited to interview (5%), reference letters shall be requested (5%) and it shall also by evaluated the potential contribution of the candidate to the ongoing Lab’s research (5%).
Evaluation methodology: Final evaluation will be based on the above-mentioned criteria. In the event of equal score between the top candidates, the jury will interview each candidate, the result of such interview to serve as the sole tie-breaker. The interview will focus on the research output (co-)produced by the candidates, namely in terms of content, novelty and innovation.
Based on the above, candidates will be ranked to reflect their global evaluation. A meeting minutes will record each jury meeting.

Notification of Results: The highest scoring candidate will be notified by email or telephone. All other candidates will be notified solely by email.
Prior hearing and deadline for final decision: After being notified, candidates will have 10 work days to present a claim by email. If no claim is received by the Champalimaud Foundation, the jury’s decision will become definitive.
The present call has the sole purpose of filling the indicated research position. This call may be cancelled at any time on or before the jury’s evaluation of all eligible candidates and the recruitment process shall be concluded on the day of the full execution of the employment contract between the Champalimaud Foundation and the selected candidate.
