Research Assistant Position (Chiappe Lab)

  1. Date: 30.10.2018
  2. Location: Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, Lisbon -Portugal
  3. Employer: Champalimaud Foundation and ERC funds
  4. Job type: Full Time
  5. Position: Technical
  6. Application start: 30.10.2018

  7. The laboratory of Sensorimotor Integration at the Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme has a one-year opening position (with possible extension) available for a research assistant fascinated with anatomy, and interested in discovering novel neurons in a multisensory and premotor area of the brain of Drosophila melanogaster.

    The position will specifically involve identifying neurons of a multimodal network that process visually based, self-motion information. The project is an ongoing
    collaboration with the Reiser and Bock’s labs at Janelia (USA). The information extracted from this work will be fundamental for understanding the relation between biophysical mechanisms of multisensory integration and dynamics in recurrent networks. Principal responsibilities include:

    1) working with a graduate student and postdoc, who are currently working in the project;
    2) reconstruct neurons and their connections from a completed electron microscopy (EM) volume dataset generated by the Bock lab;
    3) identify neurons in trangenic line collections

    We are seeking for highly motivated individuals with experience in Neurobiology, Physics or Computer science, interested in the relation between architecture and function of a neural network. Previous experience with Drosophila melanogaster is not necessary. Important qualifications include:

    1) Ability to work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative team.
    2) Attention to details
    3) Good problem solving skills.
    4) Good communication skills.
    5) Excellent organization skills.
    6) Basic neuroscience/biological knowledge.
    7) Strong interest in understanding principles in neural circuit structure and function

    The opening is available immediately and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. To apply for this position, please send your CV to Eugenia Chiappe at eugenia.chiappe@neuro.fchampalimaud.org and include a cover letter and the contact information of two references. The Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme (CNP) is aimed at establishing new links between nervous system function and behavior. Our interests are represented by the full intellectual scope of the scientists of the program. To achieve this goal, the CNP fosters colleagues to reach their full creative potential and promotes collective achievements through cooperation, exchange, and independence and diversity of thought. English is the official language of the institute.
    The institute is located at the beautiful waterfront of Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon offers a sunny Atlantic-Mediterranean climate, affordable cost of living, and vibrant culture, with good public transportation, international schools and convenient housing options both within and outside the city center.
