Transgenic & Rederivation Platform.
The ultimate mission of Transgenic & Rederivation Platform is to support cancer and neuroscience investigators in animal research. The platform provides services of strain rederivation, cryopreservation, revitalization and also production of transgenic animals. There will be an in-house repository of genetically modified animal lines and also the possibility of sharing equipment and know-how with other institutes in order to promote cooperation and higher profitability of resources among instituitions.
Transgenic production allows the generation of animal models of disease, and/or to. genetically modify certain cell types or structures so that their function can be studied. The production of genetically target animals – Knock in and knock out animals – by ES cells manipulation is not currently available but will be in the near future.
Cryopreservation and Revitalization of both embryos and sperm are crucial services since, besides other obvious advantages, they afford the safeguarding of valuable mouse lines against loss through infection, disease or breeding failure with the possibility to revitalize the line as needed. These services also turn the process of importing / exporting lines smoothly and without animal suffering.
Rederivation is a generally accepted method for cleaning animals from infectious agents that could cause disease during experiments and influence research results. The rederivation process is extremely important for moving mouse lines produced from an institute with unacceptable or unknown sanitary status to the specific pathogen free (SPF) vivarium of the Champalimaud Foundation.
Beyond the services provided, the development of new tools and being in the forefront of new technologies are important concerns of the platform to best serve our investigators and contribute for the progress of science.
